The three that are easy to get wrong
- Your name, tone, and pushback preference: Not here. Set once in global instructions and every Project inherits it.
- Company voice and privacy rules: Not here either. Those are organization-level and already apply inside this Project.
- A single repeatable task: That is a Skill. A Project is the lane several related tasks live in.

Why Project Instructions Matter
Without project instructions, every conversation with Claude starts from scratch. Your team ends up repeating the same context, tone preferences, and rules over and over. Good project instructions turn Claude from a generic chatbot into a tool that already knows how your team works.

An area you keep coming back to, not a single task. A Project is where several related jobs share the same background.
One task is a Skill. A Project is the place the tasks live.
“Draft the follow-up from my visit notes” is one repeatable job done the same way every time, which is what a Skill is for. “My Northeast accounts” is the lane that job sits in, along with the recap, the call prep, and everything else that needs the same background. A good test: will you open this Project again next week for something other than the task you have in mind right now?
The perspective everything in this lane should be written from. The same request written by your ops lead and by an outside consultant comes out differently.
The background a new hire would need to pick up this lane. Not your company bio - the part that changes the answer. Leave out who you are and how you like to be written to; that is the global layer.
Optional. Name the files you have uploaded and when Claude should reach for each one. Long reference material belongs in the files, not in this field.
Only the things that are true here and not everywhere. “Be direct” is not on this list on purpose - that is a preference about you, and it belongs in your global instructions.
The default shape for work in this lane. Whether you like bullets or prose in general is a global setting; this is this Project's work product.
Optional. The things that must never happen in this lane, whatever else is going on.

- Paste the file in, replacing whatever is there
- Save. Every new chat started inside that Project reads it first.
Anthropic updates these UIs occasionally. If the labels above don't match what you see, the location is roughly the same - look for “custom instructions” or “preferences.”
Keep this one level: Your name, your role, your tone, the words you never want used and how blunt Claude should be with you belong in Settings > Account > Instructions for Claude, where they apply to this Project and every other one. This file is only the part that is specific to this Project. Write that layer once here.
